The next giant Leap in interactivity

Science fiction is here today. No flying cars, but we now can control our computers with the wave of a hand.

This month your Chicago Adobe Users Group brings you the Leap Motion Controller. If you have not heard of it, the Leap Motion controller, it is a matchbox size device you attach via USB to your Windows or Mac computer, and it allows you to interact without touching the mouse or screen.

In our first presentation, Rich Humphreys will give you the basics on what the Leap Motion Controller does, what comes with it, and how to get started using JavaScript in your web browser to take advantage of it's features.

From there we move to Ross Gerbasi, who has been working with Leap Motion Controller since it was in beta. Followed by a short history interactivity, how we got to where we are now, he'll then talk about the good uses and bad uses of the Leap Motion device, then look into the Cursor Library and what it helps make easier for people to create usefull, exciting UIs.

If you give a mad scientist a camera...

He will want to throw in motion capture and After Effects

This month we bring back one of our favorite mad scientists, Ross Gerbasi. As a filmmaker, artist and developer, he has his hands in everything. This month he explores some of the ways film production is changing with new and emerging technologies.

In his words...

Filmmaking has shifted drastically in recent years as we now see films and TV shows being created with software and equipment that is available at a consumer level. No longer do you need extremely heavy and expensive gear to tell your stories.
We will look at some independent filmmaking gear that can easily scale up into a full film production.
We will talk about the benefits and limitations of dSLR cameras, Various Lenses, Slow Motion and then dive right into the world of Motion Control with toys from DitoGear.
We will also look at Timelapse Photography and some of the amazing visuals you can get from it especially when you add in motion control.
We will then bring this all together with various tools form the Adobe Suite like After Effects and Premiere rounding out a extremely efficient and high quality workflow.
So come out to play as there will be hands on time to explore equipment and ask any questions in this very open forum style conversation about the advances in filmmaking available right now.

So join us on May 20th to see some of what Ross has been up to. Lab coats not required.

This talk will show you how to harness the power of Stage3D to create cross-platform hardware-accelerated 2D games.

We’ll go over some of the challenges faced when transitioning to stage3D game development and show how you can take full advantage of the latest tools and frameworks such as Starling, StarlingPunk, Adobe Scout, tile set editors, and Texture Packer.

Still making animations in Flash?

Maybe you should be. Afraid that the end of the mobile Flash player means throwing away those hard learned animation skills? Not necessarily. If you know your way around a timeline, you could be at the forefront in creating animated graphics for both mobile-friendly, standards compliant, HTML5 canvas animations; or creating for the high-speed powerhouse of animation that is Stage3D. Rich Humphreys examines how to take an animation built in Flash and bring it to HTML5 canvas using the Easeljs library, then how to take the same animation to Stage3D using the Starling framework.

Touch Screens are so 2007.

Xbox has the right idea with Kinect. They looked to the 2002 movie "Minority Report" and it's gesture driven touchless user interface. Now some of the best game experiences mirror this approach.

Now if we could just connect Kinect to Adobe AIR, designers and developers could be free to create all sorts of interesting and beautiful interactions and user interfaces. This was the goal of our Speaker this month at AUG. Ross Gerbasi, developer from 15letters.com, has written a series of Native Extensions for Adobe AIR that lets developers use the Microsoft Kinect SDK.

First Ross is going to show off some of the many cool things Kinect and AIRKinect will let you do, then later he'll dive into how he got it to work and show us how to start taking advantage of it today.

This stuff is so cool, we are giving Ross the whole evening. We are positive both pixel pushers and code monkeys will both be inspired by the possibilities presented.

Perhaps hover events are not such a bad thing after all.

Stop collaboration insanity!
A better workflow for making HTML5 apps

Sasha will present a workflow for creating HTML5 apps that allows designers and developer to remove friction in collaboration and lets them focus on creating great experiences together.

For designers, he will show how you can organize your design in Adobe Illustrator so that a developer does not have to interpret your design and you don't have to keep slicing your design for production.

For developers, he will show how you can code straight against this design by pairing SVG with JavaScript.

This workflow integrates well with Git source code versioning so it's friendly to remote collaboration and big teams.

As a result of saving this time and effort, you can let your craft shine.
